    Collaborative Filtering-based Context-Aware Document-Clustering (CF-CAC) Technique

    Document clustering is an intentional act that should reflect an individual\u27s preference with regard to the semantic coherency or relevant categorization of documents and should conform to the context of a target task under investigation. Thus, effective document clustering techniques need to take into account a user\u27s categorization context. In response, Yang & Wei (2007) propose a Context-Aware document Clustering (CAC) technique that takes into consideration a user\u27s categorization preference relevant to the context of a target task and subsequently generates a set of document clusters from this specific contextual perspective. However, the CAC technique encounters the problem of small-sized anchoring terms. To overcome this shortcoming, we extend the CAC technique and propose a Collaborative Filtering-based Context-Aware document-Clustering (CF-CAC) technique that considers not only a target user\u27s but also other users\u27 anchoring terms when approximating the categorization context of the target user. Our empirical evaluation results suggest that our proposed CF-CAC technique outperforms the CAC technique

    Participant Network Patterns in Enhancing Online Community Interactivity

    Social media is having an increasing impact on businesses. In particular, the explosive growth of online brand communities has attracted organizations and marketers’ attentions. However, despite the increasing importance of online community for marketing, it is noticed that relatively few of them are successful in attracting community members and enhancing interactivity. In this study, we argue that it is necessary to have a comprehensive understanding regarding how the community members participate in the communal context and interact with each other, and thereby the community interactivity can be continued. To this end, we collected a large amount of data from an online discussion forum where we found that the participants were highly interactive across the discussion topics, thus forming robust communities. Currently, the data analysis pertaining to this study is work in progress, but we will be in a position to offer more in-depth analysis of the rich findings that the research has generated by the time of the conference

    Emerging Leaderships in an Online Community: A Longitudinal Network Analysis

    Online communities have brought great benefits to society; however, relatively few of them are successful in sustaining community activities. It is necessary to have a better understanding of the contextual development of online communities. This study adopts the theory of networked influence to address the research objective. Data is collected from an online community which has been in operation for ten years. We investigate the community’s sustainability on a longitudinal basis, focusing on its dynamic temporal development, with regard to how it was formed, became robust, and either declined or was sustained. Adopting social network analysis with a qualitative approach, we identify several types of emerging leaders and how the relay events between them had a significant impact on communication prolongation. Their influence is found to extend across discussion entities, resulting in communication homogeneity, and leading to significant network effects that are relevant to participants’ interactions

    Automatic Learning of A Supervised Classifier for Patent Prior Art Retrieval

    Prior art retrieval is the process of determining a set of possibly relevant prior arts for a specific patent or patent application. Such process is essential for various patent practices, e.g. patentability search, validity search, and infringement search. To support the automatic retrieval of prior arts, existing studies generally adopt the traditional information retrieval (IR) approach or extend the IR approach by incorporating additional information such as citations, classes of patents. Those approaches only exploit partial information of patents and thus may limit the performance of prior art retrieval. In response, we propose a novel approach which employs comprehensive information of patents and performs a supervised approach for prior art retrieval. Unlike traditional supervised learning approach which requires manual preparation of a set of positive and negative training examples, the proposed supervised technique includes a simple but effective mechanism for automatic generation of training examples. Our empirical evaluation on a large dataset consisted of 52,311 semiconductor-related patents indicates that the proposed supervised technique significantly outperforms the traditional full-text-based IR approach

    How E-Servqual Affects Customer\u27s Online Purchase Intention?

    With the boom of Internet, Internet has become one of the consumers’ online shopping channels. However, there is different in online shopping situation is because of consumers in different cultures and countries have different online shopping behavior is worth to discuss. This study is to explore the Internet users’ online shopping situation in developing country, Malaysia, and 118 questionnaire respondents were collected. Statistical analysis software SPSS 17.0 and AMOS 6.0 were used to analyze the impact on e-service quality, satisfaction, trust, and purchase intention. The model fit of this study was in an acceptable level, and this indicates that the theoretical model of this study supports the description of e-service quality for e-retailers that online shopping situation will be effected by trust and satisfaction. The result of this study will be available for those who interested in developing a transnational e-retailer as a reference, as well as academic research on cross-cultural comparative analysis

    Use of Rubber Dams During Root Canal Treatment in Taiwan

    Background/PurposeIsolation of teeth with rubber dams is an important procedure for infection control in dentistry, especially in endodontic treatment. This study surveyed the prevalence of rubber dam usage in nonsurgical root canal treatment (RCT) by dentists under the National Health Insurance system in Taiwan.MethodsA total of 1,332 completed RCT cases were randomly selected from a large database from the Bureau of National Health Insurance in Taiwan in 2004. The radiographs and dental charts of the selected cases were evaluated for the prevalence of rubber dam usage in RCT. The frequencies of rubber dam usage for RCT by dentists were compared between hospitals and private dental clinics and among six different regions in Taiwan.ResultsThe overall prevalence of rubber dam usage for RCT by dentists under the National Health Insurance system in Taiwan was 16.5%. The frequency of rubber dam usage for RCT by dentists in hospitals (32.8%) was significantly higher than that (10.3%) in private dental clinics (p < 0.0001). However, there was no significant difference in the frequency of rubber dam usage for RCT by dentists among six different geographic regions in Taiwan.ConclusionThe prevalence of rubber dam usage for RCT by dentists in Taiwan is relatively low. Because rubber dam isolation of an endodontically-treated tooth can provide better infection control, increase patient protection, and improve treatment efficiency, there is an urgent need to advise dentists in Taiwan to use rubber dams for every RCT case

    A Statistics-Based And An Simple Physics-Based Models Toward An Operational And Early Flood Warning System

    Life and property losses because of disasters such as flood and landslide are getting dramatic increases for past years. Frequent extreme weather events have even worsened the damages globally. Given sufficient information in advance, disaster preparedness and management can be well-settled. The damages and losses can be mitigated and even prevented. An early disaster warning system with enough leadtimes is essential for decision-makers to take prevented measures and execute cautions. This study proposed a prototype of an early disaster warning system which issues warnings for rainfall related disasters such as flood and landslide. Using ensemble quantitative precipitation forecasts, the system could estimate the disaster risk and issue possible threat warnings up to 72 hours in advance. The system is a statistics-based, instead of physics-based model to meet the real time operational needs. The advantage is to provide the information and issue the warnings rapidly which helps the decision-makers have more time to deploy the rescue forces such as manpower and water pumps. For the flood forecasts, the proposed system integrated artificial intelligence with historical records, design capacity of storm sewer system, and threshold rainfall to identify the high risk areas in a township level. A simple physics-based model then was imposed to identify possible flooding areas downscale to the village level. The landslide susceptibility model was developed using the logistic regression that used rainfall, topography and geology as the geo-environment variables affecting slope stability. According to occurrence of disaster and available observed records, the proposed system used typhoon events from 2010 to 2012 in Pingtung County, Taiwan to evaluate the performance. The spatial and temporal comparisons with observations demonstrated promising potential as a valuable reference for better emergency response to alleviate the loss of lives and property
